Enhancing Your Environment

WHY HIRE A CERTIFIED ARBORIST?

An arborist by definition is an individual who is trained in the art and science of planting, caring for and maintaining individual trees.

Certified arborists are individuals who have achieved a level of knowledge through at least three years of experience and have passed a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation's leading experts in tree care.

Certified arborists must continue their education to maintain their certification.  Therefore, they will be up-to-date on the latest techniques in arboriculture.

Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide the proper care.

Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly.  Proper tree care is an investment which can lead to substantial returns.  Well cared for trees can add considerable value to your property.  While poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability to homeowners.

Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, should only be done by those trained and equipped for this very dangerous work.

SELECTING THE RIGHT ARBORIST

There are a variety of things to consider when selecting an arborist which include:

  • Membership in professional organizations such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), the National Arborists Association (NAA) or the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA).

  • Proof of Insurance.  A reputable arborist will have personal and property damage insurance as well as workers compensation insurance.  Many homeowners have had to pay large amounts of money for damages caused by an uninsured individuals claiming to be tree experts.  You could be held responsible for damages and injuries that occur as a result of the job.

  • Ask for references and don't hesitate to check them.  Be wary of individuals who go door-to-door and offer bargains.  Most reputable companies are too occupied to solicit work in this manner.

  • Don't always accept the lowest bid.  Examine the credentials and the bids

MATURE TREE CARE PAYS OFF IN THE SHORT RUN AND THE LONG RUN TOO.

Taking into consideration that many tree species can live as long as 200-300 years when properly cared for, mature tree maintenance is an investment that will offer value for generations to come.

A preventative care program for your landscape is like putting money in the bank and can save you money by preventing problems.

We strongly recommend that you have:

  • CONSULTATION - an evaluation tool to call attention to any change in a tree's health, before a problem becomes too serious.  Annual inspections can prevent or reduce the severity of future disease, insect and environmental problems.

  • PROPER PRUNING - the most common tree maintenance procedure next to watering.  Pruning is often can also improve the tree structure, enhance growth, and maintain safety.  Never allow the use of a pruning technique known as "topping."  It is perhaps the most harmful pruning technique and will never be used by true arborists.

  • REGULAR MULCHING - reduces stress by providing trees with a stable root environment that is cooler and contains more moisture than the surrounding soil.

  • FERTILIZATION - provides the nutrients and essential elements needed by the tree to grow.  Soil conditions can vary greatly and fertilization is very beneficial to trees and landscaping.  Always consult a professional because improper fertilization can result in adverse affects.  It is important to know what nutrients are needed and when and how they should be applied.

  • REMOVAL - although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary.  A professional arborist can help decide whether or not a tree should be removed.  Trained arborists have the skills and equipment to safely and efficiently remove trees and stumps.  We recommend tree removal when a tree has become a hazard because it is dead or dying, and when it is crowding and causing harm to other trees and the problem can't be corrected through pruning.  Tree and stump removal is also performed when the tree is to be replaced by a more suitable specimen or to allow for new construction.
